Apricot cucumber gin fizz in two glasses

Our 6 year anniversary is coming up and I am not ready. And not just because I haven’t got his gift yet. It’s two days away and with all of the daily goings on of life, balancing our work schedules, our sleep schedules, raising the boy, working (or attempting to work) on the blog, and making major life decisions, trying to attempt to plan Emmett’s first birthday, and then an anniversary on top of it when Ben is working that day? Well, it’s not going well. We aren’t ones to over-celebrate anything, we like low key. But the acknowledgement of another trip around the sun together, and especially with this year being our first with an added addition is something I want to make sure we do acknowledge appropriately.

Mainly because it’s one year that our focus has shifted, our lives have changed, the balance of the universe has thrown the “old” us off kilter in favor of a new balance with another human. And with all of that, the sleepless nights, the thankless work, and the cups of coffee poured for one another, or sandwiches made for lunch so we can spend 10 more minutes with our boy instead of dedicated to each other, I want to acknowledge that we are still us at the end of the day and at the pinnacle of the turning of a new year.

We made it another year. That is worth of acknowledgement, appreciation, and a little celebration. Don’t you think?

There hasn’t been much “us”, but that is all to be expected. The Royal We now comes with a tiny human, and I love that even though our dynamic may have shifted to include Emmett, we are finding moments for us, and sharing it with the little one has been a gift in itself. I say that as Emmett is now sleeping through the night HA! The first months we remember reflecting a “what were we thinking?!” mentality, knowing that although the sleep deprivation lies to us constantly and makes us doubt every shred of reality before us, I know that the transition made us stronger in a lot of ways.

Perfect relationship? Nope. Maybe not even by a long shot. There are and will always be dry spells, hard times, difficult seasons even. But coming up on six years married, and ten years together, this has been one heck of an adventure, and rewarding in so many tangible and intangible ways.

But when you do come out of those hard seasons with a renewed focus on your mission as a couple, what you want to get out of your time together, and with a different albeit stronger bond, you can change tack and steer into any storm head on, and another trip around the sun stronger than the year before. Never forget there is always an opportunity to change tack, work on the “you”, and the “us”, and be better. Do one more thing together, do one more thing for each other.

The best advice I ever received was from my step-dad, “don’t be driftwood”. Marriage, life together, life in itself is not one to be washed over and just carried with the current. Each year, season, trial is one you can work through towards a better you and a better us. So I intend to practice “one more thing”, for myself, for him, for Emmett, so that I can be a better me, partner and mom for not only this next trip around the sun together, but forever.

Choose your “one more thing”, will it be taking up a hobby that helps you relax so you can be your best self? Or is it making a sandwich for your partner so they can spend ten more minutes with your kids, and with you before work? Making them that cup of coffee goes a long way, too. Maybe if we practiced “one more thing” for eachother, and even others, the world would be a better place. Chart your course for another wonderful year around the sun.

Oh yeah, this drink!! I’ve been hitting up my local farmer’s market and they had baskets and baskets of juicy, gorgeously orange and fuzzy apricots for $4. I snagged one and devoured half of them in the car on the way home. The remainder went into these cucumber apricot gin fizz glasses! Muddling cooling cucumbers, juicy apricots, and gin was a gorgeous and refreshing surprise for this heat wave. If gin, or booze, isn’t your thing, simply omit it! For the fizz, instead of plain sparkling water, or another clear bubbly drink, I went with lime LaCroix. Mix and match your favorites! I mean, if you have apricot LaCroix, that surely wouldn’t suck either! I actively encourage it!

Happy drinking friends! You can bet I am having these this weekend for our anniversary. Pop them bubbles!

And PS – I’m probably getting Ben a leaf blower for our anniversary. Nothing says true love like lawn equipment. HA!
