The theme of today is “permission”. And giving yourself permission to feel all the feelings you could be grappling with, permission to ask for help, and permission to put yourself first.

I’m trying to bring words to an overwhelming sense of defeat that has been plaguing me lately. And why is that it never has felt like enough? Why must one put a good face, even when they are struggling, culminating in a huge ugly crying meltdown? I got the question, “how do you do it all?”. Uhhh, I don’t? Or at least I might, but I surely don’t do it all well. And after that I was reminded how I need to “ask for help”. Um, if I am putting on the impression of ‘doing it all’, do you think that I am the type of person who is good at relinquishing control or admitting defeat, or heavens asking for help? I need people to give me permission to step back and put myself first. That is not an easy task.

When was the last time you gave yourself permission to put yourself first? The moral of the story is – do it today.

Emmett needed to be taken to urgent care on Friday night, with a fever of 103, and his cough from two weeks ago still lingering. Heartbreakingly sad, he was miserable, needing chest x-rays to clear him of pneumonia, breaking my heart even further, and then being diagnosed with an ear infection after all of that.

Saturday my mom came over to check on us all, she made us soup, cuddled with Emmett, and gave me permission to take a nap. Insisted on it rather. So I did. In the mix of doing my job, my momming, my blog, my wifing, my housework, and balancing whatever else comes my way, I get lost in it all. And yesterday it all came to a head, and I melted down. My daily lunch walks had gone by the wayside, my self care was on a back burner, and I was drowning in it all.

So with a post-meltdown level of clarity, I am going to work on taking it back. Putting myself on, well maybe not the front burner, but at least taking myself off the back burner. To be my better self I need to be restored, centered, whole. My love of my family is my biggest and most important priority, and I am drowning in love for them all. But I need to remember my love in myself needs to happen so I can put my best foot forward as mom, wife, dog mom, and project manager in my job.

Let’s all take it back. Self care isn’t about bubble baths, and those won’t fix it. But centering will. Do what makes you feel peaceful, whatever that is. Walking has always been one of my favorites and it’s been excruciatingly difficult at work, when I am still nursing requiring pumping twice a day, and with a babe that goes down at 6:30, I’ve got two hours before bed that I can’t leave the house to walk the dog, so I need to find another way to get the pent up energy out. With summer in full swing, gardening must now be my outlet, or yoga. Or writing again.

So now, I must give myself permission to do it. Permission to leave the dishes in the sink a little longer, and permission to do my own work on myself.

And even, get back to cooking for fun. Just as I did with these homemade rosemary lemonade spritzer cocktails. Even if you only make these as a mocktail, you will not be sorry. They are just a touch of fancy in a traditional summer drink. Enjoy one on your patio, by yourself, or with friends. Make them for one and all, and be peaceful in the joy of surrounding yourself with others, and love.

Is that enough self care love talk today? Good. Now go forth and share it with everyone you can.

Description

Bring a little sparkle to your summer time cocktail with this homemade rosemary lemonade spritzer cocktail! Add a little tipple to your drink for an added lift!! Use a floral cordial or a spicy gin for a punch!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 1/2 cup Lemon Juice
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 large sprig Rosemary
  • 1 1/2 cups Plain Sparkling Water
  • 4 ounces Gin, or Elderflower Cordial (optional)

Instructions

In a saucepan, gently heat the lemon juice and sugar, stirring until dissolved. Remove from the heat.

Gently press the rosemary between your hands to release some of the essential oils in the rosemary. Place it into the lemon juice mixture to steep. Place the lemon juice and rosemary into a jar and place in the fridge to cool.

To make a cocktail –

Fill 2-4 glasses with ice. Pour 4 ounces of lemon rosemary juice into each glass. Divide gin or other booze into each glass (if you are using), and then top with sparkling water with 2-4 ounces in each glass. Add water to your taste. Gently stir and serve immediately.
