Cuban Hot Dog with all beef hot dogs, crispy bread, mustard, pickles and black forest ham - this is a new grilling tradition!

Hot Dog Week is here friends, and we have another THREE recipes this year to get you ready for Memorial Day Weekend! Is it the end of May already? We’re trying to celebrate what we can together this year – because this weekend is a twofer for us. It’s Ben’s birthday along with it being Memorial Weekend. But since he is working this weekend – Boo – we are going to make the most of it on the days he does have off. I’m 110% behind the idea of grilling and cracking a beer, hanging out on the deck and tending my apartment garden.

We might be able to fit a mini-roadtrip in there somewhere, too. And I can’t forget, that I need to bake his birthday cake… like I did last year. Whoops. Cuban Hot Dog with all beef hot dogs, crispy bread, mustard, pickles and black forest ham - this is a new grilling tradition!

His request is simple, and by this stage in our relationship I should just remember to not ask what kind of cake he wants for his birthday – it’s always the same. He is a man of habits and routine afterall. It’s a yellow boxed mix cake with canned chocolate frosting. E.v.e.r.y. Y.e.a.r.

I mean, at least he makes it easy on me. The other part of me wants to do something lik this cake. Or that one. But he is the birthday boy, and he should get what he wants.

Especially since his birthday present is mostly a gift for the both of us. At least, it’s for him, but it will keep me from being whiney so it’s for us, for him, for me.

Poor guy.

In the mean time, hot dogs!! This is a gift for everyone! I had this Cuban dog on the list for last year, but never  got around to making it, so here it is and it was most definitely worth the wait.

Description

Kick off your Memorial Day weekend with a Cuban American favorite – the Cuban Hot Dog! With all beef hot dogs, and traditional filling, this will make you samba!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 large Baguette, quartered and then sliced for sandwiches
  • 4 All Beef Franks
  • 8 slices Swiss Cheese, or enough to cover all sandwiches
  • 1/3 cup Mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup Yellow Mustard
  • 1/2 pound sliced Black Forest Ham
  • Kosher Dill Pickle Slices
  • 3 Tbsp Butter, melted and cooled

Instructions

*Note* You can grill your hot dogs prior to putting on the sandwich, or if using pre-cooked hot dogs, you can forgo the grilling, it’s up to you. The panini press will head up the dogs. We grilled ours first, because we love that grilled flavor.

Preheat your panini press to 425. If you don’t have a panini press, preheat two heavy skillets on the stove over medium heat.

Slice baguette for sandwiches. Spread both sides of the baguette with mayonnaise. Then layer black forest ham, sliced pickles, hot dogs (pre grilled or not) cut into half lengthwise, and then swiss cheese onto one side. Top with drizzle of yellow mustard.

Top sandwich with other side of bread.

Using a brush, brush some butter onto the panini press and set sandwiches on the press. Brush the tops of the sandwiches with butter. Close panini press.

*If using skillets, add some butter to the bottom of the skillet and swirl to coat the pan. Brush the tops of the sandwiches, and place other skillet on top of the sandwiches to press down.*

Cook until the cheese has melted completely, the hot dogs are heated through, and the bread is golden brown. Serve immediately.
