Use those leftover bananas and road trip doughnuts for this quick 10 minutes camping dessert. Dripping with citrus and caramel, this is one nice change of pace from campfire s’mores.
I’m a sucker for convenience store snacks. Who isn’t? Really, you’re not? That’s a shame we can’t be friends anymore. Kidding.
I need a sweet, a salty, a crunchy and a healthy snack all for balance. And a Diet Coke, and if we’re leaving at the ass crack of 0’Dark Thirty – you can bet that doughnuts are going to be involved, too. Doughnuts or doughnut holes always made an appearance on road trips to Eastern Washington with my dad. Or fishing. Or hunting. Or any time we had a trip 3 hours or longer. It was fact.
And I miss those road trips – they were always full of memories, and road naps, and Dad-music that I sometimes like and more often than not rolled my eyes at — Read: Craig Quaquico and his mid-90’s techno mood guitaring – but they were always great road trips you can only appreciate as an adult.
Inevitably – we could never get through a WHOLE package of doughnuts – probably for the best – and they would develop that slight crunch on the outside. Stale doughnuts still made me blissfully happy. But once they reach that point that they’re crunchy – we’ve reached that arbitrary line where we can’t eat them and might even have to toss them. Toss a doughnut? Don’t say such blaphemy! Instead – let’s toss some caramelized bananas on top and let ’em soak it all in. Viola!!
This recipe is stupid simple and super classy for camping. I live, breath and devour s’mores while I’m camping just as much as the next camper – but when you’ve gorged yourself through your chocolate bars, bust out your post-hike bananas and coat them in a little sauce, pour on the doughnuts and BAM Alama WHAM!!
