Want to know how I know that the hormones are hitting me hard? I’m eating Nutella with a spoon and having a marathon of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants… and crying about it. In my yoga pants. With a messy bun.

If I wasn’t me, I’d be annoyed with me right now. And these hormones. But maybe that’s what I needed, was a good lazy weekend? After last weekend and this week, a couple of days of sitting on my duff with some chocolate and some tween girly movies was very necessary.

The reason behind it? Well, last weekend – I ended up in the ER. Eeep. Yeah, I know. Secrets. And no, not pregnant.

I am not one for secrets – because I’m terrible at them, but I’m notorious at downplaying what is happening, especially when it comes to me being in pain. The deal is that I suffer from migraines and last weekend, was a whompper. It started as a headache on Friday, just as a run of the mill headache, from a long week looking at a computer screen and probably dehydration. Then by Sunday it was getting worse. Pounding, light sensitivity, and then – my tastes changed. That’s when I knew it was going to get bad.

By the time 5pm rolled around, I was in tears begging Ben to take the night off work and take me in. Blessedly he was able to. And we went in.

But that was only the beginning. By the time we got in, it was a 90 minute wait to get to even see our first triage nurse, then another hour before I was even able to get back in. And when you’re in that much pain, screaming children running up and down the corridors is the last thing you could handle. But being moved in a wheel chair is enough to make your hurl. There was no winning. Poor Ben was doing everything he could to make it better for me.

It didn’t end there. My veins thought then would be a good time to hide taking three tries to get the IV in, leaving me looking like a human pin cushion. So with four drugs pulsing through my system, a good nap under me, it was finally abating. And Ben could finally take me home.

Since we didn’t get home until nearly 12:30 in the morning, I opted for staying home from work, and my mom – the best woman on the planet – came up to stay with me the next day, my bonus dad’s birthday no less, to make sure I stayed put and actually rested. It helped immensely, but it took three days to recover completely.

So, for anyone who does suffer from migraine, please look after yourself. And if you know someone who does suffer from them, look after them. Please don’t let them be a hero, and make sure they rest, hydrate, and see their doctor. Excruciating at the best of times, and debilitating at the worst, they’re no joke. I for one, am lucky to have a tribe to help keep me well.
