Here’s the thing, me and the Whole30 diet didn’t always see eye to eye. I had my slip ups (wine), and days where I couldn’t say “no” to a piece of cheese. It’s cheese for crying out loud!! BUT, for the 20 days I was on the wagon, I felt GREAT. Never one to believe the hype about elimination diets, I’m really glad I bit that bullet, and gave it a college try.
But the thing is, it shouldn’t have shocked me so bad that it worked, because I’ve had to go through elimination diets with Huck!! Yes, even my dog has had to deal with these before!
Being the squishy adorable, bumbly, love he is – he’s still a medical disaster. At one he was diagnosed with hip displaysia and a torn ACL. At three he was diagnosed with a laundry list of allergies so long it practically had to be rolled out along the floor to cover them all! It’s heartbreaking to watch everything your dog touches, eats or exists in make him itch, hurt, and cry. No joke! So we had to make some changes. We went grain free.
Now that’s not to say I’m hardcore grain free right now, there are things I have been able to roll back up into my diet that haven’t had negative effects, but after my roll with Whole30, I am comfortable cutting out a significant portion of those things that I realized caused me issues. Thanks be to the higher powers that cheese isn’t one of them!
But for Huck, we tried and tried with new foods, pills, and everything and now with the right combination of meds and food, he’s happy, healthy, and itch free! When he would fall over because he was itching so hard, let me tell you – heart torn out.
I’ve teamed up with Abound, who has developed a line of grain free pet food for dogs and cats that is easy to find, accessible, and well, you don’t have to go to five different pet stores to hunt it down – it’s right in your grocery store! I took their mantra, grain free and whole foods, and whipped it up into these ginger pear twice baked sweet potatoes for the Hoomans, and loaded Huck up Abound’s grain free food and treats. He’s loving them, I’m loving that he’s loving them. And all is right in our world!
So, Abound and I are giving away a prize pack of grain free treats, toys, bowls, leashes, dog food, and gift card to one lucky reader! As you can see, these are some high quality gets – the sweet potato jerky is straight up sweet potato! The sticks are made with high quality ingredients, and Huck absolutely loves the Turkey and Berry Jerky Bites.
Also included, are these Found My Animal goodies. Found is a non profit organization promoting the rescue and adoption of animals, and helping them lead happy and healthy lives. Everything here is uber high quality loot, with a positive message and action behind it. These leashes are heavy duty, not to mention beautiful. And the canvas water dish is our new favorite for hikes and road trips.

Ginger Pear Twice Baked Sweet Potato
2 Evenly Sized Sweet Potatoes/Yams
2 Tbsp Ghee, or Clarified Butter
1/4 cup Chopped Walnuts
1 Bartlett Pear, cored and diced
1 1/2 tsp Grated Fresh Ginger
1 tsp Cinnamon
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Using a fork, poke several holes in the potatoes. Bake on a aluminum foil lined baking sheet, for 45 minutes or until they are soft all the way through.
Remove from oven and let rest until cook enough to handle. Reduce heat of oven to 350 degrees.
Slice sweet potatoes in half, lengthwise. Gently scoop out contents of the sweet potatoes into a mixing bowl, add in clarified butter or ghee, and remaining ingredients. Mix together.
Divide the mixture evenly into the sweet potato skins, and place back in oven for 15 -20 minutes or until slightly crispy on top. Remove and serve warm.
